St Anne’s (2019/20) Creative Community Mapping

Creative Community Mapping – St Anne’s is the initial six–month phase of a project to map and celebrate St Anne’s. Bricks have commissioned local resident and social practice artist Jo Bushell to work with the St Anne’s community to identify activities, groups and a building which they would like to see reach full, creative potential for use by the community.

With the support of the artist; any local residents who would like to have their say will be given the opportunity to take part in a series of fun, engaging and welcoming events where, together, they will re-imagine their community space. By looking at examples of other inspiring plans of community spaces, which have already been brought into reality; the group will create their own creative community plan – a new narrative for the people of St Anne’s based on what is already valued and loved but also what could be initiated.

To reach as broad a catchment of the community as possible, we are connecting in many different ways, including through creative micro-commissions, sessions within other events/groups, informal outreach, through social media sites and accessible workshops so that the community plan created brings into being a space for all the community; where people feel connected, creative and valued.

Through open invitation, an Arts Action Group of 9 local community members has been formed to lead the project. St Anne’s Arts Action Group are: writing creative briefs for a series of micro-commissions, exploring formats to learn from other projects and shaping how this can be shared back through a community event.

This initial ‘mapping’ phase of the project is funded by National Lottery Awards for All England and Nisbet Trust and was intended to conclude at the end of May 2020.

Due to Covid19 the project was suspended spring 2020, and is being re awoken August 2020.

ST ANNE’S HOUSE

Bricks invitation to work in St Anne’s came in 2019 through St Mungo’s and Artspace Lifespace as the top two floors of St Anne’s House were earmarked for community use (as part of St Mungo’s planning condition for shelter on the ground floor), and Bricks came in to understand what the community wanted to see in a creative community space and facilitate the use. Unfortunately we never managed to get a contract from St Mungo’s so focused our efforts on the Creative Community Mapping, then due to Covid 19 St Mungos have now vacated the building, leaving it completely empty.

We recently hosted a community co-design event in St Anne’s Park to collaboratively create a proposal to take to Bristol City Council for community use of St Anne’s House for five years 2020 – 2025 to support the community with covid safe socially distance-able space for community activities and workspace.

We recently ran an open call for creative projects to engage communities in St Anne’s, the Arts Action Group are currently reviewing the submissions and will be announcing which projects are supported soon.

Jack is a creative producer and CEO with a passion for supporting cross sector creative and community collaborations and developing the ecology for visual arts practice in Bristol.

In 2018 Jack founded Bricks and has a dual role as executive lead and an active producer developing projects.

Key Bricks projects include building Bricks Public Art & Creative Infrastructure Agency and developing St Annes House as a creative community hub through codesign with the hyper local community of St Annes and the regional creative community of the West of England.

2010-18 Jack founded and ran nomadic art gallery Antlers working with artists through pop up exhibitions, partnership commissions and publishing. Antlers worked predominantly with early career artists supporting them to explore some form of stretch forward in their practice.

Graduating in 2007 with a BA Photography prior to 2010 Jack worked as an artist studio assistant and was a practising artist involved in artist led projects in Stroud.

Jack sits on Bristol’s One City Culture Board, and is an active participant in Bristol’s DIY Arts Network. Recent professional development includes Clore Leadership Short Course, Arts Fundraising and Philanthropy Fellowship (including a PGCert in Fundraising) and School of Social Enterprise Trade Up Programme.

Jo’s role at Bricks is as freelance artist/ producer for our Creative Community Mapping work in St Annes, where Jo is also an active local resident.

As a social practice artist Jo’s work encourages deeper connection and
understanding of specific environments/heritage/ourselves in relation to community and ecology. Her approach lends itself to working in community projects, schools and with individuals who are seeking creative processes for navigating transitions or need to communicate collectively, bringing diverse voices together to effect change. Her practice is informed by 16 years experience of working in adult drug and alcohol services and youth services.

Jo’s creative background is performance-based; using methods and materials which are temporary and responsive – creating site-specific processes, informed by heritage and diverse story, that allow for our own or our collective becoming.

Jo networks and collaborates with other social practice artists across Bristol including Bristol Artist Led Forum and is a member of Diverse Artist Network. She was, until recently, Co-lead of DIY Cultural Spaces Group. She is also collaborating and developing environmental projects with both Southampton University and UWE and currently developing a Covid19
‘returning curriculum’ and wellbeing project for schools.

Ash is currently our in-house graphic designer here at Bricks and hopes to help create a polished and consistent visual identity for continued application far beyond his placement. Ash enrolled in this year’s Creative Workforce for the Future programme and spent six months on a communications placement at Spike Island, in which he spent time developing various bits of visual content, including video pieces for the Instagram grid and the Story function. His educational background includes a BA in Graphic Design at Falmouth University and shortly after that, an MA in Graphic Arts at UWE Bristol. In-between these years of study, Ash worked for WeSUP Paddleboard Centre on Gylly Beach in Falmouth and as well as SUP (stand-up paddleboard) tuition, helped in designing elements of the business plan for future nationwide expansion. Ash’s personal practice is generally typography-centric, with projects ranging from publication to 3D design. Inspired by the potential in the mundane and fuelled by hoarding habits and unrelenting curiosity, Ash has most recently, created a book called ‘shopping lists:’ and designed a typeface to fit inside a cube (@aaalvk).
